   I found a Canon EOS Digital Rebel (300D), but my dealer did not supply either the battery or charger. This BP511 replacement combo from Kastar was inexpensive, and while I’ve had trouble with dimensions of “clones” of other battery types, this one slipped into the camera easily and operated it properly, though the capacity I measured was not even close to the 2600 mAh indicated on the label. These numbers seem to be “Science Fiction,” most likely from the company’s Marketing department. With a 230 mA load I discharged the battery twice, getting between 1300 and 1500 mAh before the voltage dropped to where internal circuitry “turned off” the battery to prevent reverse charging of the cells. This happens around 5.5 volts, well below where the camera would stop working. But while the capacity is well below the advertised value, it is no worse than the 1100 mAh of the original Canon BP511.The charger is basic but works well, specified to operate from 100 to 240V AC, but lacking the DC input feature seen on some similar chargers. The only indicator is a light that changes from red to green when the battery is fully charged, which takes around five hours with a fully depleted battery. Unlike some USB-powered units, the AC charger provided by Kastar will work with a battery that has been depleted to the “off” state.I have no idea how long these batteries will last, though based on other reviews I’m not expecting miracles. But the cost is low enough that replacing them every year or two wouldn’t be a problem, aside from environmental issues with lithium pollution. A plastic cover is provided by Kastar to prevent shorting the contacts when the battery is out of the camera, something not included by all suppliers of these “replacement” batteries. So I’ll take off one “star” from my rating for the incorrect advertised capacity, but can recommend these as economical replacements for use with the Canon cameras.

   I’ve bought a few of these now for different models and I have to say even when the OEM battery is found I still prefer Kastar. It takes somewhere around 30mins to fully charge. It comes a little juice in it so you can test your camera right away instead of waiting. The tech is just newer and better. It’s capacity will be around x5 of those older ones, 30-50 mins vs 2.5 hours.Kastar keeps improving these btw at least for the charger port, the ones I bought recently fit and sit well.I had one I bought a year ago that was connected via usb, I was not a fan, but this one has the metal blades built in so it plugs straight into an outlet and it folds in so it’s easy to store. Previous one had an lcd screen to show battery progress, this one has a bulb which makes it easier when you just want to glance at it across the room. But if they want to put both on the next iteration I won’t say no.The battery cap is a nice welcomed addition. Keeps contact pins clean and makes them airplane travel ready.Kastar has become my go to
