This charger only charges through an AC outlet. I used a battery that had about 15% charge remaining. Initially, the LED was red when the battery was inserted into the charger. About 1 1/4 hours later, the LED turned amber. At about 1 hour and 45 minutes, the LED turned green I checked and the battery was fully charged. The instructions state charging time is abut two hours for a fully discharged battery. I highly recommend this charger.
