EDIT: I have to update my review three months later, and take a star off. I found that this unit will drain batteries within a couple weeks if they are left in the charging slots. Unfortunately, you can’t flip the batteries around backwards and still shut the lid. I have updated sections in my review accordingly. Annoying, because the battery slots inside are then wasted space when packing your camera bag. It’s still great at charging batteries, just don’t use it for storage.I have a few different chargers for NP-FW50 batteries, both Sony and third-party. This one charges faster than all of them, while offering a more convenient form factor. In my testing when charging a single battery, it filled one of the included batteries up in an hour and forty-five minutes. That’s essentially half the time of my Smallrig 4081 (also sold by Neewer and Newell) charger, which took three hours and twenty minutes. This higher speed is achieved by actively negotiating with USB PD, requesting up to 18W of power instead of 10W like others. It can then deliver 1.5A to a single battery, or 1A per battery when two are inserted. The Smallrig charger can only do 1A for one battery, or 500mA each for two. (The llano charger matches this, when it can’t get fast charging from PD.) Sony’s official options (in-camera or with the wall charger) are even slower. The unit will hold both batteries in place when closed, meaning you can stuff it in a bag with a battery bank, without worrying about the batteries falling out and not charging. Unfortunately, it will slowly drain batteries if left in (and not charging), so I wouldn’t recommend using it as storage. It is noticeably bigger than other dual-battery chargers (with no batteries installed), but not by much.A feature I love is the ability to tell you the state of charge of the inserted batteries, even when not charging. Now I don’t have to stick the batteries in the camera to see if they’re charged or not, since the NP-FW50 design lacks anything built-in. I do wish it could also tell you how much power (in mAh) a cell took during a charge, for health monitoring, but that’s a bit nerdy. It can’t output power on the USB-C port from the NP-FW50 batteries. While this isn’t a feature I’d use (unless maybe in emergencies), I mention it because some competing products have this functionality. The two included batteries are completely adequate, but not special in any way. Capacity testing* showed they took in 1048mAh and 1038mAh, right on par for NP-FW50 packs. Real-world usage will tell how well they keep that capacity through their lifetime. I didn’t see any errors when using them in my camera. While I wish these had USB-C ports directly on them like other third-party packs, they’re otherwise just fine. The charger is also available separately with no batteries, for about 60% of the price.Build quality is great for everything. The case has a metal hinge, and has strong magnets that keep the lid shut. SD cards click securely into the holders just like the slot on your camera. Batteries also feel similar to the official Sony ones, not at all cheap.A USB-C to USB-C cable is included, as well as a carry strap and drawstring bag. None are anything to write home about (the cable is just USB 2.0 and 60W,) but I’m glad that llano didn’t bother with a legacy type-A cable.Overall, I’m very happy with everything in this bundle. It fills batteries up in half the time compared to any other charger I’ve owned, and lets you check charge level at any time. It’s designed in a way that simplifies charging on the go while also protecting two memory cards. The batteries also seem to be of good quality. Cost for the charger is steep, but it truly deserves it. I know this review seems overwhelmingly positive, but I’m thoroughly impressed.*Capacity testing was done with a Smallrig 4081 charger, after running the batteries in a Sony a6500 until it displayed the Battery Exhausted message and would no longer turn on.

I take my camera out at least once a week for street photography, and this little charger is one of my favorite pieces of kit. The batteries charge to 100% incredibly quickly compared to USB charging in the camera or other external chargers. It’s also stylish and has a pleasing soft matte finish. The only potential downside is that it is a bit bulky, but makes up for that by acting as storage for two batteries and two full-size SD cards.
